Since the need to place protection is virtually eliminated, sport climbing places an emphasis on gymnastic ability, strength and endurance, as opposed to adventure, risk and self-sufficiency. Since artificial means are used primarily for safety rather than to make upward progress, sport climbing is considered a form of free climbing.

On a route suitable for sport climbing, pre-placed bolts follow a line up a rock face. Sport climbs are typically between 12 and 36 m in length, and have eight to twelve bolts (some routes may have as few as three bolts, while other routes may have twenty-five or more).

Sport climbing can be undertaken with relatively little equipment. Equipment used in sport climbing includes:

* A dynamic rope
* Quickdraws
* A belay device
* Climbing harnesses for belayer and climber
* Climbing Shoes and chalk bag are normally used, although not technically necessary

Two quickdraws. The left side of the draws are clipped directly to the bolt. The rope will be clipped through the right side.

To lead a sport climb is to ascend a route with a rope tied to the climber's harness, and with the loose end of the rope handled by a belayer. As each bolt is reached along the route, the climber attaches a quickdraw to the bolt, and then clips the rope through the hanging end of the quickdraw. This bolt is now protecting the climber in the event of a fall. At the top of sport routes, there is typically a two-bolt anchor that can be used to return the climber to the ground or previous rappel point.

Because sport routes do not require placing protection, the climber can concentrate on the difficulty of the moves rather than placing protection or the consequences of a fall.

Sport climbing differs from traditional climbing with respect to the type and placement of protection. Traditional climbing uses mostly removable protection (such as cams or nuts), and tends to minimize the usage of pre-placed protection. Sport climbing typically involves single pitch routes, whereas traditional climbing can include single-pitch routes as well as longer, multi-pitch ascents. There are areas like El Potrero Chico that feature multi-pitch sport climbs, but longer routes generally lack pre-placed anchors due to economical, logistical or ethical reasons.

Rock types that produce good sport climbs include limestone, granite and quartzite, though sport climbs can be found on almost all rock types.

Sports Science | Leaders in Sports Nutrition | Sports Training

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 311px; height: 192px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dip0GX14IjI/TYbKzoJdWHI/AAAAAAAAAB0/sq58txdd3f4/s200/SportScienceSM.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5586375376098908274" />

Sport science is a discipline that studies the application of scientific principles and techniques with the aim of improving sporting performance. Human movement is a related scientific discipline that studies human movement in all contexts including that of sport.

The study of sports science traditionally incorporates areas of physiology, psychology, motor control and biomechanics but also includes other topics such as nutrition and diet, sports technology, anthropometry kinanthropometry and performance analysis.

Sports scientists and performance consultants are growing in demand and employment numbers, with the ever-increasing focus within the sporting world on achieving the best results possible. Through the study of science and sport, researchers have developed a greater understanding on how the human body reacts to exercise, training, different environments and many other stimuli.

The origins of exercise physiology are traced back to the early Greek physicians. Such as the noted ancient Greek physician Galen (131–201) who wrote 87 detailed essays about improving health (proper nutrition), aerobic fitness, and strengthening muscles. Assyrian Hunayn ibn Ishaq translated Galen's work, along with that of Hippocrates, into Arabic which lead to the spread of Greek physiology throughout the Middle East and Europe. Between 776 BC to 393 AD, the ancient Greek physicians planned the training regimens and diets of the Olympic competitors, which developed many principles still used today.

New ideas upon the working and functioning of the human body emerged during the renaissance as anatomists and physicians challenged the previously known theories. These spread with the implementation of the printed word, the result of Gutenberg's printing press in the 15th century. Allied with this was a large increase in academia in general, universities were forming all around the world. Importantly these new scholars went beyond the simplistic notions of the early Greek physicians, and shed light upon the complexities of the circulatory, and digestive systems. Furthermore by the middle of the 19th century early medical schools (such as the Harvard Medical School, formed 1782) began appearing in the United States, whose graduates went on to assume positions of importance in academia and allied medical research.

Medical journal publications in the United States increased tremendously during this period. In conjunction the developments in America were also continuing across Europe. In 1898, three articles on physical activity appeared in the first volume of the American Journal of Physiology. Other articles and reviews subsequently appeared in prestigious journals. The German applied physiology publication, Internationale Zeitschrift fur Phsyiologie einschliesslich Arbeitphysiologie (1929–1940; now know as the European Journal of Applied Physiology and Occupational Physiology), became a significant journal in the field of research.

From this period to the modern day, a number of key figures have moulded the field into what it is today. Below is a selection of just a few of these:

Higher-education degrees in sports science or human physiology are also becoming increasingly popular with many universities now offering both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in the discipline. Opportunities for graduates in these fields include employment as a physical education teacher, dietician or nutritionist, performance analyst, sports coach, sports therapist, fitness center manager, sports administrator, strength and conditioning specialist or retail manager of a sports store. Graduates may also be well positioned to undertake further training to become an accredited physiotherapist, exercise physiologist or clinical exercise consultant.

There are many noted institutions in the United Kingdom which run courses in sport and exercise sciences. When Love, a lab technician at ASU, isn’t examining recent soil samples and mineral deposits in the Rankin Science Building, he can most likely be found out at one of the area crags on a favorite climbing route or boulder problem.

Love’s long hours in the lab, mixed with a serious pursuit of climbing, would seem to absorb most anyone’s free time. However, even with a busy schedule, Love makes the most of his extra time to volunteer for several area organizations that seek to preserve and enhance climbing opportunities in the area. Most recently, Love has been working in a volunteer capacity as president of the Carolina Climbers Coalition on a number of projects that merge rock climbing with land conservation.

When a tract of land at Rumbling Bald, one of the state’s premier bouldering destinations, went up for sale earlier this year, many in the climbing community envisioned a not-so-distant future when the bulldozers of progress would be clearing the land for another multi-million dollar home. That very fear is what motivated the Carolina Climbers Coalition (CCC), a nonprofit organization that advocates for climbers across the Carolinas, to move quickly in acquiring the land.

In order to prevent the closure of the popular recreation area, the CCC arranged for a bridge loan from the Access Fund, a climber advocacy group that seeks to preserve access to climbing areas across the United States. The CCC applied for, and was granted, one of the first loans granted through a new program called the Access Fund Land Conservation Campaign (AFLCC). The AFLCC is the first-ever multi-million-dollar revolving loan program that provides local climbing organizations and other agencies with the funds and expertise needed to act quickly to save threatened climbing areas.

“In December 2008 we were in the process of looking for opportunities for new land acquisition projects,” Love recalled. “We went through a list of possible opportunities and this one came out on top due to the feasibility of the project.”

The CCC moved quickly through the application process and with the loan from the AFLCC, was able to purchase the land, thereby preserving the area in its natural state. Once the land has been paid for, the CCC plans to donate the land to the state of North Carolina for inclusion into the Hickory Nut Gorge State Park.

Currently, the CCC is working hard to raise money to repay the loan so that the funds they used to make this monumental purchase will be available to other climbers as soon as possible.

“We need everyone’s help,” Love said. “Whether it is $10 or $100—any money helps with this project. We need folks to spread the word to their friends who climb there and those who have never been there before. Go and enjoy this place and help us purchase it. Each and every person who donates plays a role in saving a boulderfield indefinitely.”

Love’s tireless activism and hard work to preserve land access for climbing, hiking and exploration have raised awareness of access issues and helped to create a grassroots movement to raise money to purchase and preserve other areas across the state.

“Anthony Love has done a lot to be a keystone in his community when it comes to protecting access,” Joe Sambatora, president of the Access Fund, said. “It started years ago with his work in the Boone Climbers Coalition, and has led to his work with the Carolina Climber’s Coalition. He’s put in countless hours working and collaborating with the National Park Service around Boone and helped to maintain access to some of the most popular areas around the state, not to mention the successes he and the CCC have had over the years at places like Laurel Knob, Asheboro and most recently, Rumbling Bald.

“Of course, as Anthony said, it really takes a whole team and there’s a lot of other people supporting the effort and we definitely recognize that, but we would like to recognize him for all of his outstanding leadership in that team effort,” Sambatora said.

Adventure Indonesia

A country of incredible and diverse beauty, stretches 5,151 km between Asian and Australia continents and divides the Pacific and Indian Oceans at the equator, Indonesia is the largest archipelago and the fifth most populous country in the world with about 200 million inhabitants.

Of the country's 17,508 islands, only 6,000 are inhabited and 992 permanently settled including the five main islands: Sumatra (473,606 sq. km), Kalimantan or Borneo (539,460 sq. km), Sulawesi (189,216 sq. km), Irian Jaya (421,981 sq. km) and the most populated Java Island (132,187 sq. km).

Indonesia encompasses mind-stupefying extremes: the 4,884 meter high snow capped Carstensz Pyramid peak of Irian Jaya, the lush lowland and mountainous tropical rain forest with it's endemic wildlife such as the mystical Orangutans, Sumatran Tigers, the World's smallest monkeys Tarsius Spectrums, Javan Rhinos, Tree Kangaroos, the world's largest lizard the fearsome Komodo Dragons, birds etc. which more than the entire continents of Africa, restless volcanoes, primitive forest tribes, exotic art & The club was a founding member of the Premier League in 1992, and has played in the top division of English football since 1938, with the exception of the 1974–75 season. Average attendances at the club have been higher than any other team in English football for all but six seasons since 1964–65.

Manchester United are the reigning English champions and European and Club World Cup holders, having won the 2007–08 Premier League, the 2007–08 UEFA Champions League, and the 2008 FIFA Club World Cup. The club is one of the most successful in the history of English football and has won 21 major honours since Alex Ferguson became manager in November 1986. In 1968, they became the first English club to win the European Cup, beating Benfica 4–1. They won a second European Cup as part of a Treble in 1999, before winning their third in 2008. The club also holds the record for the most FA Cup titles with 11.

Since the late 1990s, the club has been one of the richest in the world with the highest revenue of any football club, and is currently ranked as the richest and most valuable club in any sport, with an estimated value of £897 million (€1.333 billion / $1.8 billion) as of September 2008. Manchester United was a founding member of the now defunct G-14 group of Europe's leading football clubs, and its replacement, the European Club Association.

Alex Ferguson has been manager of the club since 6 November 1986, joining from Aberdeen after the sacking of Ron Atkinson. The current club captain is Gary Neville, who succeeded Roy Keane in November 2005.

AWARD WINNERS

Ballon d'Or

The following players have won the Ballon d'Or whilst playing for Manchester United:

* Denis Law – 1964
* Bobby Charlton – 1966
* George Best – 1968
* Cristiano Ronaldo – 2008

European Golden Shoe

The following players have won the European Golden Shoe whilst playing for Manchester United:

* Cristiano Ronaldo (31 goals) – 2008

UEFA Club Footballer of the Year

The following players have won the UEFA Club Footballer of the Year award whilst playing for Manchester United:

* David Beckham – 1999
* Cristiano Ronaldo – 2008

FIFA World Player of the Year

The following players have won the FIFA World Player of the Year award whilst playing for Manchester United:

* Cristiano Ronaldo – 2008

Sponsorship

AIG are the main sponsors of Manchester United, and as part of the sponsorship deal, their logo is displayed on the front of the club's shirts and a plethora of other merchandise. The AIG deal was announced by Manchester United chief executive David Gill on 6 April 2006, and is worth a British record £56.5 million, to be paid over four years (£14.1 million a year).[69] The deal became the most valuable sponsorship deal in the world in September 2006 after the renegotiation of the £15 million-a-year deal Juventus had with oil firm Tamoil. On 21 January 2009, it was announced that AIG would not be renewing their sponsorship of the club at the end of the deal in May 2010. It is not clear, however, whether or not AIG's agreement to run MU Finance will continue.

Companies that Manchester United currently have sponsorship deals with include:

* AIG – Principal Sponsor
* Nike – Official Sportswear Partner
* Budweiser – Official Beer
* Betfred – Official Betting Partner
* Hublot – Official Timekeeper
* Key 103 – Official Radio Station

The club has only ever had three main shirt sponsors. The first and longest-running was Sharp Electronics, who sponsored the club from 1982 to 2000, which was one of the lengthiest and most lucrative sponsorship deals in English football. Sharp's logo was on the front of United's shirts during these 17 years, during which the team won seven Premier League titles, five FA Cups, one Football League Cup, one European Cup Winners' Cup and one European Cup. Vodafone took over in an initial four-year £30 million deal on 11 February 2000, with the sponsorship to begin at the start of the 2000–01 season. In December 2003, the sponsorship was extended by four years with Vodafone agreeing to pay £36 million over the four years from 2004 to 2008. However, on 23 November 2005, Vodafone announced that they would be ending the deal in May 2006 in order to concentrate on their sponsorship of the UEFA Champions League.

Similarly, the club has only had four independent kit manufacturers, the first being local sportswear company Umbro. Admiral took over in 1975, and became the first company to place their logo on a Manchester United shirt in 1976. Umbro's sponsorship lasted for a further ten years, before the club struck a record-breaking £302.9 million deal with Nike. I wanted to add some tips from my own experience:

1. Ads can work well in-between other stuff. On a games site of mine, some of the games don't contain ads next to the game area; the AdSense ad will only be shown in-between game rounds. This is the time the visitor is not concentrating on performing a task but might take a small break, and be open to the option of visiting new sites.

2. Put too much emphasis on AdSense and your site may be linked to less. The more available space you dedicate to AdSense on your site, and the less you differentiate between ads and content in your design, the more money you earn with the program, right? Not quite. While pushing the AdSense may result in short-term gains, it might also convince some visitors that the site is too crowded to be worth visiting again. And some of those visitors may also be bloggers or other people who might otherwise help to promote your site with links to it. And the less your site gets linked to, the less traffic it gets, meaning AdSense revenues may go down in the long term.

3. Even if you get huge traffic, the AdSense income from the site is more dependent on the site type and audience. Google targets AdSense ads automatically to the site content. Or at least, it does so ideally – but some types of content fare better than others with this targeting. I noticed for instance that AdSense does better on a games site than on a technology blog. I also heard people say that AdSense does quite good on product oriented blogs; say, one post solely about the iPod; another post solely about Gadget XYZ, and so on.

4. Image ads can be relevant and work for you, but they might also apall some visitors. Google's AdSense program gives you the option to choose between a couple of different ad formats. Two main groups are text ads vs text & image ads. When you choose the latter, Google will deliver what they deem works best for your content (or so one would hope, and it would be in Google's best self-interest to serve you the best possible ad, it seems).

However, Google doesn't really know your layout preferences, and they don't really understand when your audience thinks ads are "too much"; and considering image ads include Flash animations (which you can't disable, once you go for image ads), Flash animations may well push some people away. One thing you can do is to only show image ads in areas where they don't disturb the content, e.g. at the end of posts. Also, you might want to listen to visitor feedback on the ads being served; I received emails before that the blinking ad on this or that site made a person want to leave the site, at which point I blocked the specific advertiser via the AdSense Setup -> Competitive Ad Filter option.

5. When it comes to context sensitive targeting, you can increase or lower the importance of certain parts of your page. To help Google find a matching ad for your content, you can use the HTML comment syntax by encapsulating more important parts with

... your important site content here ...
.

Or, to lower the importance of a section, use:

... your not so important site content here ...

(Google notes that it may take up to 2 weeks for this change to your site will be taken into account by the AdSense.)

What if your site doesn't have any good matchable content to begin with, though? Say, the page just includes an image. Well, for the reasons of search engine optimization but also ad optimization you might want to consider using at least a descriptive title, an explanatory footer containing the important keywords or keyphrases (the kind of footer that actually helps the human visitor by explaining what the page is about). In the case of image content, reasonable alt and title attribute texts should be used as well.*

*Whatever you do, don't resort to "keyword-stuffing" as it doesn't help your visitors and may get your page ranked lower in search engines.

6. Be aware of risks when you change ad layouts too much. I once had a system on the server to randomly differ between various AdSense layouts on the same page. Doing so I was hoping to add some good variety to keep the ads at least somewhat interesting and notable. Shortly after I stopped doing so and simply included a rather big static area for the AdSense to "do what it wants," the AdSense revenues for that site increased. Now, I don't know if this was a coincidence of some sorts, as revenues often go down or up even when you don't do anything, but it might well have been that there was a connection between adding too much homemade randomization, and lowered revenues.

At another time, during the redesign of this blog, I switched from one ad format to another for the end-of-posts AdSense ad space. This, combined with perhaps other layout changes, suddenly cut the ad revenues in half for the blog. It took me some time to realize that I had some ad channels* set up for the specific old layout size, and by changing this I must have kicked out all those advertisers who were pushing their ads through the channel.

*This setting can be found at AdSense Setup -> Channels.

7. Use competing ad systems when AdSense doesn't seem to work for a site. At CoverBrowser.com, which shows galleries of comic and book covers and so on, I tried including AdSense ads in "non-annoying" places in the layout (including trying to use AdSense affiliate links via AdSense Setup -> Referrals), but this didn't seem to work at all. However I then tried "affiliating" the "buy" link below individual covers, utilizing the eBay affiliate commission system offered by AuctionAds.com*. (Disclosure: Patrick Gavin, co-owner of AuctionAds, paid me for consulting before on other projects, like Sketchcast.com.) This worked a lot better, and as it was simply connected to an existing site feature, it also didn't add clutter.

A good start to find other ad programs is to search for adsense alternatives on Google... you will see a lot of lists which are dedicated to competitors. (Note that some of these competitors may be US-only.) You may also want to join an ad or blog network like The Deck, Federated Media (disclosure: I was part of Federated Media before), or 9 Rules. Before joining such a network – which might require you to show them your traffic stats and so on – check if their typical ads and campaigns fit with your site layout and your general ad type preferences.

*CommissionJunction also offers an eBay affiliate system but CommissionJunction has really low usability, in my opinion; setting it up is confusing.

8. Sometimes you may get a sudden increase in traffic, hence ad clicks, but you can't locate the source of the traffic. I'm using Google Analytics to track my sites, though AdSense is also a good first indicator of traffic explosions... because it will show the combined page views of all your sites (provided you include AdSense on all of them), as opposed to Google Analytics, where you need to check site by site individually.

However, sometimes even with Google Analytics, you won't be able to locate the source of your traffic because there's no specific new popular referrer being shown (a referrer is the site linking to your site, provided people click on that link). In these cases, it may well be that your site has been discussed in a TV show or similar, as the show won't "link" to you (but audiences will be entering your domain manually into the browser when they like what the saw on TV). When you feel that there has been a traffic explosion sometimes you may get additional email feedback in regards to your site, and it makes sense for you to ask your visitor: where did you first find out about the site? Maybe the can let you know about the name of the TV show, or magazine, or other "offline" source responsible for the peak. (I sometimes sent pointers to the BBC Click show for instance, with partly enormous effect.)

9. Consider using AdSense even when the page doesn't get any traffic yet. Who knows, some day the traffic suddenly explodes, and you might not realize fast enough and thus miss out on the action (as sometimes, traffic goes as fast as it comes).

On the other hand, reversely I would suggest to never do a site just to make ad money with it. That kind of motivation may lead to spammy sites that don't help anyone really. (If a project is great, it's great even if it doesn't make any money.)

10. Making money with AdSense takes time. In my experience, it may take many months to years for a site to gain enough traffic to make OK money through AdSense... if ever. I have almost never experienced any site making quick and easy money with AdSense (though you may be getting quicker results than me of course, as it depends on so many variables!).
I think for any site getting a couple of thousands of visitors a day, you might want to start playing around with AdSense to see where it takes you (if you didn't already include AdSense anyway just to see what happens, and following up on tip #9). As you are paid in US-$, the actual benefit the ad revenue will bring depends on your local costs of living as well (you might even ponder moving or going on an extended holiday trip if your local costs of living are too high for your site revenues to cover).

STUDENTS and BUSINESS

People, I follow one of the compulsory subjects that discuss business issues. "Transfer fees weren't as high then but it would have been a world-record fee - only for United to price me out of a move.

"It was a similar situation to the one Cristiano is in now, in that United wouldn't let me go for what would have been a world-record fee.

"I was happy to stay and I think Ronaldo is happy at the club too. "I must focus on my recovery. I'll be training with a ball in two months."

Ronaldo's timescale has not been verified by club medical staff. Thanks to VMWare Windows is spreading throughout the datacenter. And, of course, there is only one operating system to use if you are dependent on Microsoft apps like Outlook, Word, and Excel. While I have joined the chorus of security folks who rail against the Microsoft Monoculture I still cannot believe some of the uses for Windows. Some of them are just downright silly, some you may claim are criminally negligent.

So here is the Top Ten List of Worst Uses for Windows:

1. To Display a Static Green Arrow Over the Open TSA Security Lanes at Detroit Metro

I kid you not, at the main security checkpoint to get into Detroit Metro there are monitors over each metal detector. The ONLY thing those monitors ever display is a big green arrow pointing down. Oh, occasionally they display a blue screen with a Windows error notice.

2. Ticket Scanner at Frankfurt Airport

Another example of too much horse power for a simplified task. In this case I saw a Windows boot up screen on the little laser scanner for checking people on to the plane. Why not program some stripped down embedded system for that task? IT would be open source most likely and would not need to be updated every month.

3.           Gift Certificate Dispensing Kiosk

I am responsible for this one. Back before the turn of the century I needed to sell printed gift certificates from kiosks in downtown Birmingham, Michigan. All I could find was a manufacturer in Seattle who charged me $10,000 a piece including the touch screen and beautiful purple stand. The OS was Windows NT. It meant that twice a week I had to deploy a technician (me) to each kiosk to reboot them because they would freeze up due to memory leaks. Eventually the manufacturer came up with a fix. I downloaded a script to each machine that would reboot it automatically every day at midnight. It may be hard to comprehend today but Microsoft effectively trounced Sun, DEC, HP, and IBM in the enterprise with products that were so flawed that they needed to be rebooted every 24 hours. (That's scheduled downtime, not used in calculating five nines.)

4.           Job Application Kiosk

Now we get into security. A little retailer in the Boston area used stand alone kiosks for presenting job application forms. Hackers found it convenient to compromise the Windows based machine and steal tens of millions of credit cards from the retailer. Yes, it was TJX.

Microsoft Feeds Cash to Online Services Business

With the possibility of a Yahoo acquisition still uncertain, Microsoft is pouring hundreds of millions of additional investment dollars into its Online Services Business (OSB) in an aggressive effort to compete with Google in online advertising.

On a conference call Thursday to report its fiscal 2008 earnings, Microsoft Chief Financial Officer Chris Liddell said the company is investing the money in its online properties to drive advertising revenue and improve the performance and reach of its search engine and advertising network.

Microsoft's OSB is its weakest-performing division next to its Entertainment and Devices Division which -- despite the popularity of the Xbox product -- like OSB does not operate profitably.

Microsoft posted more than US$60 billion in revenue for fiscal 2008, and even OSB showed a revenue gain of 32 percent, from $2.44 billion in 2007 to $3.21 billion in fiscal 2008.

For the year, however, OSB lost $1.23 billion in operating income; a nearly 100 percent increase over the $617 million loss in operating income in fiscal 2007.

Liddell noted that Microsoft understands the weight of investing heavily in OSB if the company doesn't reap return on that investment, especially in light of the segment's lackluster results over the years.

"We do not make these investments lightly, as the loss in this division will be a drag on an otherwise exceptionally good performance," he said.

Liddell acknowledged that had Microsoft managed to seal the deal with Yahoo during the 2008 fiscal year, which ended June 30, it would have "accelerated" Microsoft's goals for improving OSB's performance and its search business in particular, and perhaps the investments would not have been necessary.

However, when it became clear the deal would not happen in the short term, Microsoft "made some decisions to accelerate our online services' organic growth strategy," he said.

Specifically, the investments will be made in several areas of the online business, with two-thirds of the money going into Microsoft's search assets, Liddell said.

One area of focus on search will be to drive usage of its search engine, as well as "business-model innovation, specifically in the area of high-value commercial search," Liddell said.

He cited Microsoft's Cashback program as an example of the latter. Launched in May, Cashback is comparative shopping feature in Microsoft's Live Search that offers consumers rebates on purchases of products found through the search engine. It's aimed at luring consumers away from Google and Yahoo.

Microsoft also will seek distribution partnerships to bolster online advertising and will consolidate display and search advertising into a single ad system for publishers and advertisers, Liddell said.

Microsoft also plans to invest in its adCenter advertising platform by making "small acquisitions" to improve the technology of the platform, as well as signing up new partners to increase its number of advertisers and the amount of "high-quality inventory" available to them, he said.

The rest of the money will go into Microsoft's communication and social-networking strategies, as well as a plan to provide more entertainment content via the MSN portal, Liddell added.

Even as it's pouring its own money into its search business, there is still a chance Microsoft will eventually acquire Yahoo or at least its search assets at some point.

As of Friday, however, the companies remained locked in a public war of words over a proxy battle led by Carl Icahn, who recently teamed up with Microsoft to offer Yahoo a proposal to purchase only its search business. Yahoo rejected that proposal last Saturday, even though Microsoft claimed it was Yahoo Chairman Roy Bostock's idea to do such a deal.

Yahoo on Friday did win an ally against Icahn, who aims to remove the current Yahoo board at a shareholder meeting next month. Legg Mason, one of the largest holders of Yahoo stock, said it will back the company's recommendations for its board of directors instead of those offered by Icahn.

There are also rumors that Microsoft is in talks with Time Warner to buy AOL to bolster Microsoft's online business. However, while a deal with AOL would be less culturally and politically inflammatory and possibly easier for Microsoft to negotiate, the company would not win the valuable search assets of Yahoo.

The $100,000 Keying Error

Although it sounds disastrous, making a $100,000 mistake seems relatively minor when stockbrokers have lost millions by hitting the wrong key. The following case proved to be different, however.

An ordinary bank customer, Grete Fossbakk, used Internet banking to transfer a large amount to her daughter. She keyed one digit too many into the account number field, however, inadvertently sending the money to an unknown person. This individual managed to gamble away much of the sum before police confiscated the remainder.

Subsequently, the case received extensive media coverage in Norway. The Minister of Finance criticized the bank's user interface and requested new and improved Internet banking regulations. Suddenly, the risk to Internet banking had become apparent to both the government and ordinary citizens.

Clearly, the user made a slip. She also had the chance to correct the typo before she hit the confirm button. However, as we shall see, the system also had every opportunity to catch her mistake. Yet this did not happen. The system's developers had neglected to build in a simple check that would detect if the correct input were missing.

This case raises questions about what the minimum validation procedures from a banking system developed for ordinary users should be. It also challenges us, as system designers, to help users avoid such errors.

Today's users operate alone in front of a computer, with intermediates and colleagues replaced by computer systems. This new reality makes it important to have interfaces that can offer as good as—or even better—error detection than that found in previous manual systems.

FOSSBAKK CASE

The Fossbakk case provides an illuminating example. The Internet system she employed when making her fatal mistake was one common to a large group of Norwegian banks. Reviewing this case provides insight into the types of typos that users make, the psychology behind "confirmation," and the pitfalls inherent in many Web-based transactions systems.

Fossbakk's daughter's account number was 71581555022, but she inserted an extra 5 and keyed in 71581555 5022. The user interface accepted only 11 digits in this field (the standard length of a Norwegian account number), thus truncating the number to 71581555502. The last digit is a checksum based on a modulo-11 formula. This will detect all single keying errors and errors where two consecutive digits are interchanged. Inserting an extra 5 changed both the ninth and tenth digits.

The average checksum control will catch only 93 percent of the cases in which such errors occur. For Fossbakk, the final eleven-digit number was a legal account number. However, only a small fraction of all legal account numbers are in use. Further, the chance of mistyping the account number so that it benefits a dishonest person without income or assets is overwhelmingly low in a homogeneous country such as Norway. Our user was thus extremely unlucky. The person who received her $100,000 transaction and kept the proceeds has been sentenced to prison, but this does little to help Fossbakk get her money back.

LITIGATION

Fossbakk took the case to the Norwegian Complaints Board for Consumers in Banking. This board deals with disputes between consumers and banks. The board has two representatives for the consumers and two from the banks, with a law professor as chair. In a three-to-two vote, Fossbakk lost. The chair voted for the bank, arguing that "she made an error and has to take responsibility." He also regretted that Norwegian regulations set no limit for a consumer's loss in these cases, as there would have been if Fossbakk had lost her debit card.

Fossbakk is now taking the case to court, backed by the Norwegian Consumer Council. She argues that she typed 12 digits and that the bank system should have given an error message in this case, instead of ignoring all typed digits after the first 11. She has acknowledged she would have no case if only 11 digits had been typed. The bank argues that she cannot prove by any measure of probability that she keyed 12 digits. They further state that there cannot be different rules of responsibility depending on the number of digits given. Finally, they stress that she confirmed the $100,000 transaction.

At this point, I was called in as an expert witness for Fossbakk. In my opinion, and I should expect that of most other computing professionals, a system should give an error message when the customer types a too-long number. Clearly, such a test can be inserted with a minimum of effort. In fact, the Financial Supervisory Authority of Norway has required all banks to implement this functionality based on the Fossbakk case.

Reasonably, we could argue that the bank showed negligence when developing the user interface in question. However, can we prove, beyond doubt, that Fossbakk keyed 12 digits? Since any digits beyond 11 were stripped from the HTML form, no information log exists that can tell us what happened.

BANK SIMULATOR

The answer to this case cannot be found in the literature. It seems that researchers lost interest in studying keying errors when keypunches disappeared. We therefore decided to get our own data by implementing an "Internet bank simulator," a simple interface that works similarly to the system Fossbakk used.

Our system consists of two forms. In the first form we entered the data, date, customer identification number, message text, amount, and account number. After hitting the "pay" button on this form, the data appeared in a new form for confirmation, allowing the user to either confirm or edit the displayed information. Students from a college and some high schools, 69 testers altogether, engaged in entered 30 transactions each from a predetermined test set. After removing some outliers, this gave data on 1,778 transactions.

Results

Our student testers got 124 account numbers wrong, 7 percent of the transactions. This error rate is higher than we would expect in a real system. First, since analyzing faults is our initial task, the simulator does not offer any error messages. However, the user must confirm the transaction, just as in the real system, and the count will not include any errors corrected before confirmation.

Second, the testers enter a large set of transactions. In some cases, the account number for the preceding or following transaction has been used instead. This could happen in real life, but will be much more frequent here since testers enter the transactions from a list. Third, the test situation does not involve any real money. We suspect that users would verify transactions more carefully when using a live system.

While the overall error rate might be higher, there seems to be no reason why the distribution of different error types should be any different from what we would find in a real system—an exception being the case in which an account number is replaced by another from the data set.

In 29 percent of the cases with a wrong account number, the number ran too long. In half the cases where this happened, students made the same error as Fossbakk, inserting an extra digit in a sequence of two or more identical digits. The bank interface's strategy of skipping digits beyond 11 would have given the correct number in 64 percent of the cases. Of the remaining abbreviated numbers, the modulo 11 test captured all but three. That is, of the nearly 1,800 transactions, three (0.2 percent) would have passed the banking interface's error-detection routines. Multiply this by the nearly 200 million Internet transactions performed each year in Norway, and we see that this small percentage hides a massive problem.

In an improved interface, with a "too long" check, along with the modulo 11 routine, all errors made in our test would have been captured—except in cases where someone entered an account number from another transaction in the set.

Analysis of customer identification numbers, also a part of the transaction, showed the same result. Adding an extra digit in a sequence is a normal mistake. Missing a digit in a sequence is also easy. This test found these errors most commonly. If we ignore the error of typing another account number from the set, "too long" errors occur in 41 percent of the cases, "too short" errors in 35 percent, and wrong 11-digit numbers in 24 percent.

Given these statistics, it seems nonchalant to code software that lacks a detect-too-long number. Since none of the people who entered an extra digit or missed one managed to finish with an 11-digit number by making yet another error, we can state with high probability that Fossbakk entered a 12-digit account number.

Confirmation

This leaves us with the argument that she confirmed a $100,000 transfer to the wrong account—as did the students in 124 of our test cases. In addition, for every tenth transaction, the simulator replaced the typed number with a similar-looking number before confirmation. For example, it replaced the number 70581555022 with 70581555502. In only five out of the 178 cases, 2.7 percent, where this was done did the users recognize the error and correct the number.

It appears that most people perform the inspection while keying, not when the whole number is displayed onscreen. In many ways, this is efficient. While keying, we can concentrate on one digit at a time, and after keying we have a large number. If this seems correct, we hit the "confirm" button.

Psychologist Donald A. Norman explains this behavior in his book, Psychology of Everyday Things (Basic Books, 1988). Here, a user confirmed deletion of his "most important work." According to Norman, the user confirms the action, not the file name. Thus, the "confirm" part of the transaction, while having some legal implications, has a minimal effect on detecting errors.

ACCOUNTABILITY

Like many new IT applications, Internet banking is effective. As users, we enjoy reduced costs and 24/7 availability. However, transferring real money based on instructions from possibly inexperienced humans who might slip up means we must look to the system for help. Developers must require that it intercept as many errors as possible. If Fossbakk had used the manual system instead—by writing a letter to her bank requesting the transaction—no responsible employee would have removed the 12th digit of the account number in hopes this would correct the error.

We should expect more. The banking system could offer the account owner's name as confirmation when an account number is entered. In cases where this conflicts with privacy issues, a first name or alias could be used. The system could give a warning message whenever a previous pattern is violated. For example, if we pay a utility bill of $100 to $300 each month, we should get a warning if the reported amount is way off in either direction. Further, e-invoices and other automatic procedures can limit the number of transactions that must be keyed in, reducing the overall error rate.

In Fossbakk's case, the banking system erred. Next time, it might be a weapons system or medical information system that fails. Examples from these areas have already revealed misinterpretations between systems and users that caused serious consequences. For all systems, we must, as computer professionals, protect users from their own errors, intercept all detectable errors, and give informative warnings when we believe the user might have made an error. The "she made an error and must take responsibility" defense is too simple. We need systems that work in collaboration with the user such that the overall error rate drops to a minimum. Yes, we need responsible users, but a good system can handle most slips and typos they make, as this case shows.

Panjat Tebing
- Seorang jutawan sedang latihan untuk panjat tebing.
